An Abu Dhabi Supermarket-cum-bakery was shut down by the ADFCA last monday because of unhygienic conditions of the place including having pests.

The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA), is like the FDA of the UAE [check out their profile here], ordered a punitive closure of Hani Supermarket and Bakery WLL located at Shaikh rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum Street (Airport Road) because of repeated food safety rules violations according to the press release issued by the ADFCA on monday.

The Acting Director of Communication and Community Service at the ADGCA, Ahmad Abdul Karim Al Sharaf, said the outlet had violated several food safety rules. "First of all, sufficient number of workers had not undergone the Essential Food Safety Training provided by ADFCA, a mandatory requirement for all food establishments in the emirate. Secondly, food items were stored and prepared in improper conditions. Sweets were being prepared while cleaning and maintenance work was going on. Cockroaches and insects were found in the outlet," he explained.

They found out that there were insufficient washbasins for the Bakery workers. With these violations ADFCA inspectors recommended that the Supermarket/Bakery be closed till the violations are rectified to comply with the rules and regulations of the ADFCA, the official said.

A representative of the shop owner denied all the charges made by the ADFCA. According to Gulf News, they were told that they were ordered by the ADFCA not to operate while maintenance work was going on inside and it was not due to any food safety violations.

He claimed that the shop had sent all of their food handlers on the ADFCA's mandatory food safety training. "Some of them failed the exam and they will be sent for the exam again; that’s the usual procedure," said an anonymous representative.

ADFCA already warned the violations on February 14 but there was no progress even after almost 7 months, they said. The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority has helped improved the compliance of the food safety laws in the emirate.

There were also a lot of complaints from regular consumers that I hope the ADFCA would take notice.
