Whether you’re hosting a Christmas party with your mates, having some pre-drinks for a buck’s party, or simply celebrating a birthday at home, serving the right kind of drinks is essential to making sure everyone has a great night.

If you want to get out of the simple “beer and spirits” rut, here are five suggestions for cocktails that won’t make anyone feel too girly.

The Manhattan

A timeless classic, this was the preferred drink of Frank Sinatra and his gang. This drink is always in style and projects an image of a suave and classically cool guy.

¾ oz. Dry Vermouth
1½ oz. Blended Whiskey

*Stir with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Serve with an olive.

The Martini

Can anything be manlier than the signature drink of James Bond? A dry Martini shows off your taste for classics while at the same time affirming an urban and contemporary character. Whether you have it shaken or stirred doesn't matter: stirring it will prevent ‘bruising’ the gin (a slight bitter aftertaste) while shaking it will make it colder. It’s a matter of personal preference.

1 2/3 oz. Gin
1/3 oz. Dry Vermouth

*Stir vermouth and gin over ice cubes in a mixing glass. Strain into a cocktail glass. Serve with a twist of lemon peel or an olive.

The Rusty Nail

The pure imagery of this drink is enough to affirm its manliness. Pair the sweet Drambuie with your favourite smooth scotch, blended or single malt, and you have yourself one exquisitely tasty drink. Not only does this assert your masculinity by evoking images of a hard day’s work with tools in the sun, it tastes great and is a favourite among many.

¾ oz. Scotch
¼ oz. Drambuie

*Pour Scotch over ice cubes in an old-fashioned glass. Float Drambuie on top.

Bourbon/Scotch/Rum and Coke

Simple and effective. With some of your favourite whiskey or rum coupled with coke in your glass, no one will question your masculinity. It is inexpensive and befits any man. There’s nothing fancy to it, plenty of variations in scotch, bourbon and rum and it just works.

1 1/2 oz. Bourbon/Scotch/Rum
4 to 5 oz. Coke
Ice

*Fill glass with ice. Pour in liquor and top it off with coke.

Beer

Of course, if all else fails to pique the interests of your house party guests, beer is for the manly men who just don’t care. A laid-back drink you can have any time, it’s cheap and does the job it’s supposed to. Perfect at bars, barbecues, parties, restaurants... absolutely any social engagement you can imagine. It quenches thirst and, depending on the quality of beer, tastes great.

*Fill a schooner with beer or drink straight from the bottle for added manliness.
